New tip411 program launched by Hazard, KY PD helps notify public, find suspect

The Hazard Police Department’s (HPD) latest investment seems to be paying off after a man-hunt for an armed robber in Hazard Friday evening was cut short thanks to information shared across social media outlets via the tip411 service.

Michael Scott Thompson, 31, of Hazard, was arrested Friday night after allegedly attempting to rob two area businesses.

Hazard police, along with KSP, rushed to get the word out about Thompson, with the HPD posting on Facebook about it.

“The post was shared 186 times and viewed by 7,280 people in a little over two hours,” the HPD posted on their Facebook page later Friday night.

Community Tips Help Newton, KS PD Crack Down on Crime

“The people are in the virtual world, the social media and so we have to go and meet them there,” Newton Police Department Sgt. Bryan Hall said.

They call it proactive policing. They launched an app called Tip 411 and revamped its Facebook about a year ago to get people to leave more tips. It’s working, tips are pouring in.

“I handle the social media so i get those calls in the middle of the night or those messages so I have a lot of interaction,” Hall said.

They say numerous cases often start with community tips. “It points us in a direction where to start watching, where to start building our investigation.”
